The Frenchman now sits fifth in the all-time list for appearances in LALIGA EA SPORTS, while Atleti’s early goals have established a new team record.
Atlético de Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo in Matchday 14 of the 2025/26 LALIGA EA SPORTS campaign was a special one for a few different reasons. It was always going to be a significant fixture, as this was the first meeting between the two historic clubs in Spain’s top division in the 21st century. They’d actually faced off in the second tier more recently than they had in the first division. With Real Oviedo having only just returned to LALIGA EA SPORTS, Diego Simeone’s side were the clear favourites and so it proved as they eased to a comfortable 2-0 win, with Alexander Sørloth scoring both the goals, in the 16th and 26th minutes.

14 out of 14: Atlético de Madrid always take the lead
The first of the Norwegian’s goals made some history. It meant Atlético de Madrid had scored the first goal in all 14 of their league fixtures so far this season. Los Colchoneros have so far faced RCD Espanyol, Elche CF, Deportivo Alavés, Villarreal CF, RCD Mallorca, Rayo Vallecano, Real Madrid, RC Celta, CA Osasuna, Real Betis, Sevilla FC, Levante UD, Getafe CF and Real Oviedo, and they’ve scored the opening goal in every one of these games.
No club had ever achieved that before. The previous record for scoring first in every game was held by the Real Madrid squad of 1991/92, who netted first across their first 13 fixtures of that league campaign. Now there is a new record, established by this Atlético de Madrid side who come out with purpose every single week.
Unsurprisingly, considering they always take the lead, Los Rojiblancos have hardly been behind on the scoreboard this season. They’ve only been losing for 17 minutes of the entire league campaign: the last five minutes of their loss to RCD Espanyol, their only defeat so far, plus three minutes and nine minutes, respectively, in their eventual victories over Rayo Vallecano and Real Madrid.

A historic night for Antoine Griezmann
As well as celebrating the victory of the team, Antoine Griezmann also achieved a personal milestone on Saturday night. The Frenchman played his 544th game in LALIGA EA SPORTS, which moves him above Eusebio Sacristán and into fifth position on the all-time appearances list. He’s now only behind Raúl González Blanco (550 matches), Raúl García (609), Joaquín (622) and Andoni Zubizarreta (622). He is already the foreigner with the most appearances in Spain’s top flight, ahead of the 520 of Lionel Messi, and is now aiming to chase down these other legends of the Spanish game.
The Frenchman’s appearances have come for three clubs, having played 329 top-flight games for Atlético de Madrid, 141 for Real Sociedad and 74 for FC Barcelona. Curiously, it’s his former club Barça who he’ll face next, returning to the recently reopened Spotify Camp Nou for a Tuesday night game against the defending champions. Griezmann has never won the LALIGA EA SPORTS title during his career and knows that winning games such as Tuesday’s is the key to having a shot this season. If Atlético de Madrid can once again score the first goal, they’ll have a good chance…
