The teams who finished inside the top two last LALIGA EA SPORTS season both began their pre-season programmes on Monday July 13th.

The 2026 World Cup may still be going on in North America, but already FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have commenced their pre-season activities. The players who didn’t participate in this summer’s international tournament returned to work this Monday July 13th, undertaking the typical medical exams with which each pre-season begins. In the case of FC Barcelona, some 25 players were present at the Ciutat Esportiva on Monday for medical tests. This included first-team players such as Alejandro Balde, Andreas Christensen, Fermín López, Marc Casadó and Gerard Martín, while several youth teamers also took part in the medical exams. The team will have their first training session of pre-season in Catalonia on Tuesday.

It was a similar scene in the Spanish capital, where the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo underwent tests in Valdebebas. Also there was José Mourinho, with the Portuguese coach back in charge of Los Blancos ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Can FC Barcelona win a third title in a row with Hansi Flick?

The big question for Hansi Flick and FC Barcelona entering the 2026/27 campaign is whether or not Los Azulgranas can keep up their winning run, following back-to-back LALIGA EA SPORTS titles under Hansi Flick. He became the fourth Barça coach in the 21st century to win two league championships in his first two seasons, after Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde, but only Guardiola went on to win the title in his third season as well.

With Robert Lewandowski having departed, after scoring 120 goals in 193 appearances over his four years at the club, Flick will have to tweak the attack and find other sources of goals. That could be new signing Anthony Gordon, but there is certainly work to be done.

FC Barcelona also had by far the highest number of players going to the 2026 World Cup of any LALIGA EA SPORTS club, with 15 members of last season’s squad jetting off for North America. That means there will be several footballers starting the season late for Los Azulgranas, another challenge Flick will have to prepare for. That’s why pre-season will be so important, as several of the players in the B team may be required to step up in August and September.

Can José Mourinho bring the magic back to Real Madrid?

Following two seasons without a major trophy, Real Madrid are desperate to return to winning ways this season. That’s why they’ve turned to José Mourinho, one of the most successful managers of the 21st century and a figure who guided Los Blancos to a memorable LALIGA EA SPORTS title in 2011/12, won with a record 100 points.

Speaking to Real Madrid TV, Mourinho has already outlined his mission statement: “Creating a culture of work, responsibility, ambition and, something I know well, responsibility and the honour of working for Real Madrid. I really like this concept. It’s not about working at Real Madrid; it’s about working for Real Madrid. And it’s with this mission-driven spirit that I am here.”

The Portuguese will also be missing some of his most important players when they take a post-World Cup break, but many members of his squad were already at Valdebebas on Monday for the first day of pre-season training. The quest to win the 2026/27 LALIGA EA SPORTS title has already begun.
