The 2025/26 LALIGA EA SPORTS season is very much alive, with three matchdays played so far. Real Madrid and Athletic Club are the early leaders, while FC Barcelona, Villarreal CF and RCD Espanyol sit right behind. There are a number of lessons we’ve already learned, so let’s go through some of the key takeaways from the first month of the new campaign. It’s the perfect start for Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid
Real Madrid have had a perfect start to the season, winning their first three matches against CA Osasuna, Real Oviedo and RCD Mallorca. New coach Xabi Alonso could hardly have dreamed of a better start to his tenure. After already getting a chance to work with the squad during the Club World Cup, where Los Blancos reached the semi-finals, now Real Madrid have made a strong start to the LALIGA EA SPORTS season.
Athletic Club could challenge for the title
Having enjoyed their best start to a league season since 2009/10, things are looking rosy at Athletic Club. The Basque outfit have taken nine points from a possible nine to begin the campaign, overcoming Sevilla FC, Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis, all by one-goal margins. While the club’s main objective for the year is to qualify for the Champions League once again, there are some fans who dream of a title challenge. Los Leones haven’t won the championship since 1983/84, but perhaps this is the year for Athletic Club to seriously compete at the top of the table.
Joan García is the real deal
Although FC Barcelona will be disappointed to already be two points behind Real Madrid and Athletic Club in the table, it could have been worse for Hansi Flick’s side. New goalkeeper Joan García has been excellent to start the season, especially in the 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano. It seems Barça have a world-class goalkeeper for a long time to come.

All three promoted teams can compete
It’s always interesting to see how the newly promoted teams do at the beginning of the season. What we’ve seen so far is that all three of Elche CF, Real Oviedo and Levante UD can compete. Even if they have had varying degrees of success in terms of results (Elche CF have five points, Real Oviedo three and Levante UD zero), they’ve all shown some positive signs, even with all three facing a top-three team from last season already.
Getafe CF remain in good hands
Despite a difficult schedule to begin the season, with all three of their games so far coming away at home, Getafe CF sit on six points already. That’s because they remain in good hands with José Bordalás in the dugout. Even though the squad was still a work in progress through the month of August, Bordalás found solutions and secured impressive wins away at RC Celta and at Sevilla FC. Once again, Los Azulones have one of the best coaches in the division leading the way.
Rayo Vallecano do know how to play twice a week
When a team qualifies for Europe for the first time in a long time, as is the case with Rayo Vallecano this season, there is always a fear that they won’t have a big enough squad to do well both on the continent and domestically. However, Rayo Vallecano have had a very good start to the season, even while navigating a crucial Conference League playoff against Belarusian side Neman Grodno. Just three days after winning the second leg of that tie, they managed to go toe to toe with FC Barcelona and earn a 1-1 draw against the reigning Spanish champions. It seems Rayo Vallecano will be just fine combining the Conference League with LALIGA EA SPORTS.

Atlético de Madrid will need a miracle to win the title
Having won two LALIGA EA SPORTS titles with Diego Simeone in the dugout, you never know when Atlético de Madrid might make a push for another championship. They face an uphill battle if they’re to win the title this year, though, having collected just two points from their first three fixtures. Only twice in the competition’s history has a team finished in first place after failing to win any of their opening three fixtures: FC Barcelona in 1973/74 and Real Madrid in 1988/89.
Girona FC’s poor 2024/25 wasn’t a blip
After achieving their best ever result in 2023/24, qualifying for Champions League football, Girona FC then struggled domestically in 2024/25, finishing 16th. There was a theory that their poor performances in LALIGA EA SPORTS were a result of the extra strain that midweek European football put on the squad. However, Girona FC are still having issues and they sit bottom of the table with one goal scored and 10 conceded. Their problems might be more long-term than many people thought.
Smart transfers business equals results
Two of the most active clubs in the transfer window were Villarreal CF and RCD Espanyol, with both clubs bringing in a lot of talent. In the case of El Submarino Amarillo, they acquired the likes of Santiago Mouriño, Renato Veiga and Alberto Moleiro, as well as signing Taion Buchanan to a permanent contract. As for the Catalan club, they’ve signed players such as Marko Dmitrović, Miguel Rubio and Tyrhys Dolan and committed Roberto Fernández to a permanent deal. It’s little surprise to see both clubs doing well, sitting on seven points each already.
Mbappé is out to retain his Pichichi Trophy
In 2024/25, Kylian Mbappé finished as the top scorer in LALIGA EA SPORTS with 31 goals, winning the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Shoe. This season, he has already started strong with three goals in three matches, as he aims to retain those individual prizes. Considering the Frenchman was on zero league goals at this stage last season, he is very much on course to better his 2024/25 numbers.
