Sevilla 22-0 Real Betis (10/03/1918, Regional Championship)
One of the most infamous meetings between these clubs is that of 1918, a game before modern records began and a game which Sevilla FC won 22-0. Historians have been arguing for over a century as to what exactly took place that day, and it’s believed that Real Betis sent a team of youngsters to represent them in protest at a decree which banned two of their star players from taking part because they were still completing military service.
Real Betis 0-2 (3-4 on penalties) Sevilla FC (20/03/2014, Europa League)
As if this derby couldn’t become any more intense, these two clubs were once paired together in a Europa League knockout tie, the round of 16 of the 2013/14 edition of the continental competition. Fittingly, the tie went to penalties after both had picked up 2-0 wins away from home. The second leg may have been held at Real Betis’ imposing Estadio Benito Villamarín, but the home fans went home disappointed as Sevilla FC won the shootout 4-3 before going on to win the tournament on penalties against Benfica.

Sevilla FC 3-5 Real Betis (06/01/2018, LALIGA EA SPORTS)
One of the most incredible derbies is the eight-goal thriller on King’s Day in the 2017/18 season. Fabián Ruiz set the tone immediately, scoring for the away side just 21 seconds into the match. Sevilla FC managed to fight back and make it 2-2 at half-time, but two goals in quick succession from Riza Durmisi and Sergio León earned Los Verdiblancos a commanding lead. Although Clement Lenglet pulled one back and the visitors were under pressure, Cristian Tello scored in stoppage time to settle the game and send the away fans in the top corner of the stadium into a frenzy.
Real Betis 1-0 Sevilla FC (02/09/2018, LALIGA EA SPORTS)
Later in 2018, there was another famous chapter in ELGRAN DERBI history. This time the score was a lot lower, just a 1-0 victory for Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarín. But, the fact that the goal was scored in the 80th minute and by club legend Joaquín makes this derby win one of the favourites for Béticos. It was only the second time the winger had ever scored in ELGRAN DERBI, after previously doing so in 2002, and he celebrated the moment with the kind of euphoria that belongs to this derby.
Real Betis 2-1 Sevilla FC (16/01/2022, Copa del Rey)
In the 2021/22 season, these two rivals met in the Copa del Rey and the match had to be finished behind closed doors after an incident with the scores at 1-1. When the game did resume, Sergio Canales scored to make it a 2-1 final score and to send Los Verdiblancos through. Making this derby even more memorable was the fact that Manuel Pellegrini’s side went on to win that year’s Copa del Rey.
