LALIGA EA SPORTS’ breakout teams

The last time Getafe CF managed to qualify for Europe was back in 2019/20, with José Bordalás at the helm in his first tenure at the Coliseum. The next campaign saw them finish eighth, but what followed was five bottom-half finishes including a few successful relegation battles. Getafe CF only managed to secure safety with one game to go last season, thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win at RCD Mallorca on Matchday 37.

However, Bordalás’ side hit the ground running by winning three of their first four games of the 2025/26 campaign. A drop in form saw them go winless in their next five games, but they’ve bounced back with three victories in their last six. Currently sitting eighth in the table, Getafe CF are well and truly back in the hunt for a European spot, five years after disputing their last Europa League match.

That campaign also marked the last time RCD Espanyol appeared in European competition. In fact, in 2018/19 the Catalan side finished seventh, six points behind Getafe CF, with both teams clinching Europa League qualification.

Yet, things didn’t play out as Los Periquitos may have hoped, with RCD Espanyol getting relegated to LALIGA HYPERMOTION twice in the next four seasons. Having clinched promotion a couple of years ago, the Catalans managed to secure safety on the last weekend of the 2024/25 campaign.

Fast-forward to the ongoing season, only four teams have recorded more wins than RCD Espanyol (eight), who currently sit fifth in the table thanks to three-game winning streak. Manolo González’s side have been solid at home, where they have won six of their nine games so far. Although they haven’t quite emulated this form on the road, no team has conceded fewer goals than RCD Espanyol (six) away from home so far this season.

Getafe CF and RCD Espanyol face off this weekend, on Saturday night, and it’ll be a fascinating clash, with both of these teams striving to qualify for Europe just a year after narrowly avoiding relegation.

From European contenders to relegations rivals

With two games to go last season, eighth-placed Rayo Vallecano were level on points with ninth-placed CA Osasuna, with both teams also just one point ahead of RCD Mallorca in the battle for a Conference League play-off spot. Rayo Vallecano went on to secure European football for just the second time in their history, with both CA Osasuna and RCD Mallorca missing out by a slim margin.

Just a few months after battling for a top-eight spot, RCD Mallorca have won just three of their 15 games so far this season, currently sitting two points above the relegation zone following a 0-0 draw away at newly-promoted Real Oviedo.

Meanwhile, CA Osasuna grabbed a much-needed 2-0 victory over Levante UD on Monday to end their six-game winless slide in the league. After five top-10 finishes in their last six seasons, Los Rojillos are 15th in the table, just three points clear of the relegation zone.

It should be noted that in 18th sit Girona FC, a team that stunned European football just a couple of years ago by finishing a club-record third in the league table and securing Champions League qualification for the first time in their history. Now, they’re battling just to stay in the division.

As we reach the mid-season point in a highly competitive LALIGA EA SPORTS, it’s as clear as ever that fortunes can change in an instant in Spanish football’s top flight.
