The final countdown for the 2026 World Cup has begun, as the United States, Canada and Mexico are preparing to host one of the biggest football events in the world. Spain have already secured a spot in the group stage and the battle to lock up one of the three goalkeeper slots in Luis de la Fuente’s squad has intensified as we are heading into the last stretch of the 2025/26 LALIGA EA SPORTS season. With a month to go until the March international break, FC Barcelona keeper Joan García, Athletic Club’s Unai Simón and Real Sociedad’s Álex Remiro are looking to catch the eye of the national team coach.

Unai Simón: The mainstay in goal

Simón has established himself as Spain’s starting goalkeeper under De la Fuente. The Athletic Club shot-stopper played a key role in La Roja’s journey all the way to 2024 European Championship glory before starting in all of Spain’s World Cup qualifiers earlier this season. With him in goal, the national team won five of their six games to finish top of Group E, as Simón kept five clean sheets to help Spain secure automatic qualification despite losing their 100 percent record in a 2-2 draw with Turkey.

Meanwhile in the league, the 28-year-old keeper has started in all of Athletic Club’s 24 games so far this season. With the Basque side struggling to rediscover their form, Simón hasn’t managed to enter the race for the Zamora Trophy, awarded to the goalkeeper who has the lowest goals-to-games ratio in the league. He has let in 34 goals and has kept five clean sheets, with Los Leones currently sitting ninth in the table.

Álex Remiro: Awaiting his opportunity

The Real Sociedad shot-stopper has been consistently called up by Spain, forming part of the national team’s squad in all the competitions over the last three years. Having made just two appearances in that stretch, Remiro will look to jump on a potential opportunity that comes around despite being aware that the competition for a spot is extremely fierce.

“Joan García is having an incredible year, as are [Arsenal’s] David [Raya] and Unai… and I’m going to add my name to the list,” Remiro told El Larguero earlier this month.

“It’s good for the goalkeeping position, it’s good for Spain, and it’s bad for Luis. In the end, he has to decide. We’re all a family, we all contribute, and the important thing is that we’re doing well and that the debate isn’t about whether there’s a good goalkeeper in Spain.

“The national team’s goalkeeping is of a very high standard, and the fact that there are three, four, or five of us at a good level is good for the team, to be close to winning the World Cup.”

A poor start to the season saw Real Sociedad struggle before bouncing back under new coach Pellegrino Matarazzo in the new calendar year. With just one clean sheet in 24 games, Remiro might have not made as much of an impact this season, but his performances over the years have earned him a spot among the finest Spanish goalkeepers featuring in LALIGA EA SPORTS.

Joan García: Yet to debut for Spain

Having stood out for his performances over the last two seasons, García has been knocking on the national team’s door for a while. The 24-year-old keeper pulled off some sublime outings for RCD Espanyol last term, earning a move to reigning champions FC Barcelona, where coach Hansi Flick opted for García as his starting goalkeeper and he made the most of the opportunity.

Only Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois (11) has kept more clean sheets than García’s nine, with the Barça keeper currently boasting the best coefficient in the top flight with 14 goals conceded in 18 games. According to FBref, he also has both the best save percentage (the percentage of saves a goalkeeper makes to the number of shots made on the goal) with 81.8 percent and the best clean sheet percentage (percentage of matches that result in clean sheets) with 52.9 in LALIGA EA SPORTS.

“I want to keep working and improving,” García said in January. “Every player wants to play for the national team. If that happens in the future, it will be wonderful.”

García is already considered one of the best goalkeepers in the league and it now remains to be seen whether he could be called up to be part of De la Fuente’s squad for the upcoming international break.
