Los Pericos have won four league games in a row for the first time since 2008/09
Without a doubt, one of the stories of the season in LALIGA EA SPORTS is that of RCD Espanyol. The Catalan club currently sit fifth in the table with 30 points from 16 matches, and they’re on a run of four wins in a row. Manolo González’s side have defeated Sevilla FC 2-1, RC Celta 1-0, Rayo Vallecano 1-0 and now Getafe 1-0, with a Leandro Cabrera goal earning all three points at the Coliseum on Saturday evening. With three clean sheets in a row, Los Pericos have conceded just 16 total goals from 16 matchdays. Only Villarreal CF, with 13 goals, have conceded fewer, and El Submarino Amarillo have even played one game less.

It’s a historic run of form for the club. Not since 2008/09 have RCD Espanyol won four league fixtures consecutively, when they overcame Real Racing Club, Real Sporting, Real Betis and Valencia CF in a row when they were coached by Mauricio Pochettino.
Manolo González understands the significance of the current achievement. After the win against Getafe CF, he stated: “I’m proud of the team. Winning four games in a row is very difficult and I’m very happy with the image we’re projecting. We always adapt to the game and compete well. The team is eager to do so and today that was evident. Apart from the victories, which are the most important thing in football, I’m happy with the image the team is projecting. We’re proving very difficult to beat.”
It has been quite a turnaround for the coach and for the club. In the 2024/25 campaign, Los Pericos were sweating it out in the relegation battle until the final day of the season, when they defeated UD Las Palmas 2-0 to mathematically secure their place in the top flight of Spanish football. After 16 matchdays last season, they had just 14 points to their name and there was pressure on the coach. Now, they sit on 30 points, making this the second-best start to a season for the club. Only in 1995/96 did they have more points at this stage, when they’d accumulated 34 and ultimately finished fourth.

Can RCD Espanyol qualify for Europe?
As things stand, RCD Espanyol would qualify for European football. Fifth position would likely deliver a ticket to the Europa League, although there is a chance that it could even give access to the Champions League. That’s what happened last season, when Spanish clubs’ results in Europe were good enough to earn LALIGA EA SPORTS a bonus Champions League berth, one scooped up by fifth-placed Villarreal CF.
Even if LALIGA EA SPORTS doesn’t receive a fifth Champions League spot this time around, RCD Espanyol fans can still dream of playing in that top European competition. The team is just four points behind fourth-placed Atlético de Madrid, and this having played one match less.
Manolo González doesn’t want to get too carried away, and has insisted that securing enough points to avoid relegation remains the primary objective. He told the media: “I am very happy and calm. What I want is for the team to continue along these lines. We have to compete well and see how far we can go. Once we reach 42 points, we will consider how far we can go.”
The last time RCD Espanyol qualified for Europe was for the 2019/20 Europa League campaign, when they reached the Round of 32. The club would love to return to continental action and it’s a very real possibility, especially if they keep this winning run going. Athletic Club at San Mamés is next up, before the Christmas break.
