RC Celta hadn’t won away at the Bernabéu since a Copa del Rey first leg in 2017, and they hadn’t taken all three points in a league game there since November 5th 2006, over 19 years ago. Even at home, Os Celestes had been struggling against Real Madrid in recent years. They entered Sunday’s game on a run of 11 consecutive defeats against the club from the capital, but that all changed thanks to a stellar team performance and some individual moments of brilliance.

Of course, Real Madrid did have some chances, meaning goalkeeper Ionuț Radu was called into action to keep the scoreline level at 0-0. One save in particular stood out, as he reacted lightning fast to parry away an Éder Militão header from a 16th minute corner.

By keeping the game goalless, RC Celta were able to come out and stun the Bernabéu in the second half. Swedberg produced the most precise of backheel flicks from a Bryan Zaragoza cross in the 53rd minute, directing the ball past Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Real Madrid proceeded to lose two defenders as they chased an equaliser. Fran García was sent off for two yellow cards in the 64th minute, before Álvaro Carreras joined him in getting sent off in stoppage time. Up against nine men, RC Celta put the cherry on the cake for their travelling supporters by scoring a second goal, a beautiful team passing move which ended with Swedberg rounding Courtois and walking the ball into the net.

After the game, Swedberg credited the overall team performance and the preparation from the coach as being key. He said: “I’m very happy. It was a hard-fought match. We knew we had to run a lot, work hard in defence, but that we were going to have those chances that win you the game. We always talk a lot with the coach about where the spaces are, and that helps a lot. I have to thank him and my teammates for finding me in those dangerous areas of the pitch.”

RC Celta: Always a danger on the road

For RC Celta, this was their fourth consecutive victory on the road in LALIGA EA SPORTS. They’ve defeated CA Osasuna 3-2, Levante UD 2-1, Deportivo Alavés 1-0 and now Real Madrid 2-0, in a run stretching back to October. No team is earning more points on the road this season than Claudio Giráldez’s men. They’ve picked up an average of 2.00 points per away game, the exact same as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

On the other hand, they have the second-worst home record in the competition. The fans won’t worry too much about that for now, as they celebrate this historic triumph in the Bernabéu, but the focus will soon switch to home games against Bologna in the Europa League and Athletic Club in LALIGA EA SPORTS next Sunday. Next matchday, Os Celestes will look to build on this impressive win against Real Madrid.
