Clubs from across the first and second divisions of Spanish football will be represented at this summer’s tournament by footballers who played for them last season.

The 2026 World Cup is about to begin, with football fans from all around their globe turning their focus on their national teams following the conclusion of the domestic leagues. As is usually the case, Spanish football will have a significant presence in another major international football tournament, with the vast majority of LALIGA EA SPORTS clubs, as well as several LALIGA HYPERMOTION sides, having strong representation, with their players expected to have prominent roles for their national teams this summer. In fact, 18 of the 20 teams which participated in last season’s top flight will have at least one representative in this edition of the World Cup, that has been expanded from 32 to 48 teams. Plus, four LALIGA HYPERMOTION clubs are represented too.

It comes as no surprise that European powerhouses such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal CF are represented by numerous players across several World Cup teams, including the majority of the front-runners to win the competition. Barça, who won LALIGA EA SPORTS last season, are the Spanish club with the highest representation, with 15 players going.

Atlético de Madrid have as many as six players in the squad of reigning World Cup champions Argentina, while two Real Madrid stars have been called up by the 2022 finalists France. And, FC Barcelona will be represented by eight footballers in Spain’s squad alone, while eight Villarreal CF players in total will also make the trip to North America.

Yet, it’s not only the top four in LALIGA EA SPORTS who boast a strong presence in the upcoming tournament, as Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has also called up internationals from clubs such as RC Celta, CA Osasuna, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. RC Celta striker Borja Iglesias made the 26-man La Roja squad, while Víctor Muñoz was also included in the roster after pulling off a sublime campaign for Los Rojillos. Athletic Club’s Unai Simón has long been established as Spain’s starting goalkeeper, while Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal netted the winner in a 2-1 triumph over England in the 2024 European Championship final.

Countries across the World Cup call up LALIGA stars

Meanwhile, RCD Mallorca, Girona FC and Real Oviedo may have not managed to secure safety in a highly-competitive relegation battle, but all three will still send representatives to North America. Colombia have called up Johan Mojica and Samú Costa has made Portugal’s squad, while Azzedine Ounahi and Axel Witsel will represent Morocco and Belgium, respectively. Bottom-placed Real Oviedo will see three of their players travel across the pond, with Haissem Hassan (Egypt), Federico Viñas (Uruguay) and Kwasi Sibo (Ghana) all making their respective World Cup squads. That shows just how competitive Spain’s top division is, that even the 20th-placed side from last season had internationals in their squad.

All three 2026 World Cup hosts boast at least one LALIGA player, with Villarreal CF stars Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi representing Canada and their teammate, Alex Freeman, called up by the USMNT. Meanwhile, Atlético de Madrid midfielder Obed Vargas and his Real Betis counterpart, Álvaro Fidalgo, have made the squad of Mexico, coached by a LALIGA legend in the form of Javier Aguirre.

Even in LALIGA HYPERMOTION, Spain’s second division, several clubs are seeing players head to the World Cup. Two CD Castellón players are going, as both Brian Cipenga (DR Congo) and Awer Mabil (Australia) have been called up to represent their respective national teams, while Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa defender Homam Ahmed was included in Qatar’s roster and Granada CF goalkeeper Luca Zidane (Algeria) will also be there along with Real Racing Club midfielder Gustavo Puerta (Colombia).

While Spanish club football may be taking a break until the teams return for a much-anticipated 2026/27 campaign in mid-August, in the meantime LALIGA fans will have the opportunity to follow many of their favourite stars at this summer’s World Cup.
