SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to extended action from the Premier League and Serie A, with matches scheduled to run from Saturday 23 to Monday 25 April 2022.

The pick of Premier League matches for this weekend sees Arsenal host Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium in London for an early kick-off on the afternoon of Saturday 23 April. This was once the heavyweight bout of the Premier League – often a title decider – but this season it’s only a key clash in deciding which club claims fourth place and the final UEFA Champions League berth for next season.

The Gunners have shown great progress under manager Mikel Arteta, despite some setbacks in recent weeks, while the Red Devils have yet to really hit their straps under interim boss Ralf Rangnick, but the outcome of this clash remains entirely unpredictable.

Arteta is determined to lead Arsenal back into the premier continental competition, but sees that as only the first step in a major ‘project’ for the club: “Hopefully by then we will have been able to take the club to a different level. I hope we’ll have made our people very proud of what we’ve done,” said the Spaniard.

“You need to be yourself and I want people to understand that if I’m here, it’s because I think I can give the best of myself for the club. That’s by showing the passion, the energy and the immense feeling of gratitude and clear direction of where I want to go. Because if you don’t have that, you will get found out very quickly.”

Elsewhere in this round, the title battle between Manchester City and Liverpool will rage on in separate clashes, as the Citizens welcome Watford to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon, while the Reds will have to wait until Sunday evening for their Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has bemoaned the intensity and physicality of the rivalry against Everton – which will be put into even sharper focus due to the Toffees’ struggles and a previous short-lived feud between their manager Frank Lampard and the German tactician.

“It’s always a completely different game, so I really very often don’t like the intensity of the game, it’s too much for me,” said Klopp. “I like physical football, I have no problem with that, we play that, other teams play that, but in that game very often people put too much in. I can’t say it’s my favourite game of the year to be honest, because of that.”

Also keep an eye out for Brentford v Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea v West Ham United – two all-London clashes – as well as a South Coast derby between Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton.

The top clash from this weekend in Serie A is the meeting of Lazio and Milan at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The Rossoneri are desperate to claim all three points from their trio south to the capital city, as they chase a first Serie A title in more than a decade, while Le Aquile are scrapping for a top-six finish and European qualification for next term.

Milan manager Stefano Pioli has urged his team to keep their heads down in this final stretch of the campaign: “We must not put the cart before the horse,” said the veteran tactician. “The traps and obstacles are still many. There are still many games, if we think too far we lose our reality of the moment. And this must not happen.”

Title rivals and reigning champions Internazionale also have a tough game, as they welcome Roma to the San Siro. This clash not only has Scudetto implications, but also sees Jose Mourinho – beloved by Nerazzurri fans for leading them to a treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and UEFA Champions League in 2010 – returning as the opposition manager.

Napoli are also in the title equation and they have the ‘easiest’ game of the top trio, as they travel to Stadio Carlo Castellani to face Empoli, who are safely in mid-table and coasting toward the end of the season with little to play for (they will neither be relegated nor qualify for European competition).

Yet Neapolitans boss Luciano Spalletti will not want his team to underestimate any challenge at this critical point of the season: “We will prepare fully with the focus on our match. What happens to Inter and Milan? This is out of our control… all we can control is how we prepare and how we react to the game this weekend.”

Elsewhere in Italy for this round, Juventus will face a tricky clash away to Sassuolo, who have been in fine form through the second half of the season and have an exciting attack trio on Domenico Berardi, Gianluca Scamacca and Giacomo Raspadori, while Atalanta could push Venezia closer to relegation trouble with a victory at the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo.
