Azimio files charges against Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei

Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance leader Raila Odinga has said the coalition has filed charges against Nairobi police Chief Adamson Bungei for using brutal force on demonstrators during their Monday peaceful demos.

“We are going for individual responsibility and culpability against officers who acted against the constitution. So far we have a case to file individual charges against Mr Adamson Bungei, the Nairobi police chief. We will make Bungei and his enablers understand that the days when regimes could brutalize and butcher citizens with impunity are long gone,” Raila said.

He added: “However, we commend those among the police who showed restraint in their actions and showed respect for the rights of their fellow Kenyans.”

Raila decried the silence of the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights on the ‘brutal misuse of police’ that saw two protestors die from bullet wounds on Monday.

“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all our people who were arrested on Monday. The brutality witnessed on Monday does not belong to this century. It is more disgusting because the citizens were acting within the provisions of the constitution and we had given notice of the intentions to march in Nairobi. It is impunity at its worst, but we are determined to confront it as they saw on Monday,” he said.
