For the second year in a row, fifth place in Spain’s top division brings with it a place in the next season’s Champions League group stage. Thanks to the results of Spanish clubs in Europe, which includes Real Betis’ run to the Europa League quarter-finals, LALIGA EA SPORTS was confirmed last week to have an additional spot in the top UEFA competition. Now, just a few days later, Real Betis have clinched it for themselves.
When the team from Seville play in the Champions League next term, it’ll be just their second ever participation in this tournament and their first since 2005/06. Back then they finished third in a group containing Chelsea, Liverpool and Anderlecht, and this time they’ll hope to go on a run in the most prestigious of the continental competitions.
Speaking about the qualification, coach Manuel Pellegrini stated: “I’m really pleased, really happy with what the team has achieved throughout the season, having overcome a series of setbacks, including defeats at times and injuries. To end up qualifying for the Champions League at home in front of our fans is a joy for everyone.”
Star winger Antony, who celebrated with his shirt off and waving a green and white flag post-match, also spoke about the joy of the moment. He said: “That was the goal for all of us. We were already dreaming of this. I’m so happy to be part of this team, of this club that I love so much. That’s why I didn’t stop running for a single minute, because I knew we needed to win. I told myself I wouldn’t leave here without the victory. Thankfully we got the three points, the points that take us to the Champions League. To form part of this team is a source of pride for me.”
Six years in a row qualifying for Europe
Reaching the Champions League is the culmination of a long and successful sporting project at Real Betis. Since Manuel Pellegrini took over in the green and white half of Seville in 2020, the club has qualified for Europe every season. That’s six seasons in a row making it into Europe, with four of the previous occasions coming in the Europa League and once in the Conference League, where they reached the final in 2024/25.
The Chilean tactician also steered Los Verdiblancos to a Copa del Rey victory in 2021/22, one of the most memorable cup runs in club history. Real Betis have well and truly become a consistent contender in the top half of LALIGA EA SPORTS, the kind of club where a star like Antony is happy to play.
