Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has called upon the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to launch investigations into the manner in which the Sports Ministry spent monies allocated for the Deaflympics team to Brazil and unearth the ghost members who made the trip and their roles.
“I have reliable information that Ministry of Sports officials sponsored their girlfriends and boyfriends to the just concluded Deaflympic games held in Brazil. This is the same case we had with the Tokyo Olympic Games last year,” Cherargei said at the Parliament buildings this afternoon.
In the just-concluded Summer Deaflympic Games, he alleges that ministry officials, selected sports journalists, and other government officials were paid higher allowances than the athletes who were representing the country.
“What justification would you give to pay allowances more to the ministry officials, and journalists over the athletes who have to toil, sweat and blood representing the country, but yet you give them low allowances and people who are holidaying in five-star hotels, swimming, visiting saunas and enjoying themselves are given more allowances,” he posed.
During this year’s Deaflympics event held in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, team Kenya not only surpass that of the last edition held in Turkey, in 2017, where Kenya had 16 medals, five gold, five silver, and six bronze, but it is the best ever since the country first took part in Copenhagen in Denmark in 1997.
