Technology and beyond: the Wanda Metropolitano

Standing proudly on the eastern outskirts of Madrid – Spain’s capital and one of the world’s most innovative cities – is the Wanda Metropolitano, a pioneering arena that boasts some of the finest cutting-edge technology in modern construction. Indeed, Atletico Madrid’s new home opened its doors in 2017 to the acclaim of being the first 100% LED stadium in Europe.

In today’s increasingly digitised and connected world, the Wanda Metropolitano very much belongs in the 21st century. The stadium offers guaranteed mobile coverage. As if that wasn’t enough, the arena also features a 360º ribbon board display that spans over 530m², the only one of its kind to be found across the LaLiga Santander grounds.

Once you set foot inside the stadium, the sound of 68,000 die-hard Atleti fans accompanies the breathtaking light and sound extravaganza offered up by Philips ArenaExperience, with the two combining to turn every matchday into a veritable delight for the senses. All of this technology makes the Wanda Metropolitano the ideal venue for major sporting events, such as the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, and concerts, with the stadium’s 336 LED floodlights able to display over 16 million colours. Less than five years after its inauguration, the arena has already welcomed the musical talents of Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran and Iron Maiden, among others, as well as having hosted corporate events of major brands, who have been suitably impressed by the more than 20 multi-functional rooms within the complex.

Despite having established itself as a leading financial and cultural centre, Atletico de Madrid’s stadium isn’t just about the technology. References to the club’s decorated history abound in the streets surrounding the arena, with the club having successfully managed to retain the essence of its iconic former home, the Vicente Calderon, and the glorious nights played out on the banks of the Manzanares river. As they make their way down the Avenida Luis Aragones, named after the former player, coach and a man who was the very embodiment of what Atletico stands for as a club, supporters are greeted by over 160 commemorative plaques that pay tribute to those who have clocked up over 100 appearances for Los Rojiblancos. The Paseo de las Leyendas celebrates the Atleti careers of the likes of Paolo Futre, Gabi, Fernando Torres and Diego Forlan and offers fine views of the biggest flag to be found anywhere in the country, which waves proudly over the stadium. A considerable 338m² of red-and-white fabric flaps tirelessly as it battles against the wind, an image that instantly brings Los Colchoneros’ never-say-die attitude to mind.

All of the above make the Wanda Metropolitano far more than your run-of-the-mill stadium. It’s a state-of-the-art arena that’s befitting one of the most dedicated and passionate fan bases in world football. They recently reached over 130,000 members (including more than 58,000 season-ticket holders) on the club’s books. These loyal supporters are more than prepared to stick with their team through thick and thin in their longing to once again taste LaLiga Santander glory.
