They’ve finished seventh in LALIGA EA SPORTS, even with just 32 goals scored.

For the fourth time in club history, Getafe CF will play in Europe in the 2026/27 season. The club from the south of Madrid defeated CA Osasuna 1-0 in Matchday 38, thanks to a Luis Milla goal, to clinch seventh place in the 2026/26 LALIGA EA SPORTS standings and a ticket to the Conference League. With 51 points, Los Azulones finished one point ahead of Rayo Vallecano to grab the last European spot, promoting a euphoric pitch invasion at the Coliseum on Saturday night. This is a remarkable achievement by the club and by coach José Bordalás, who was also in charge the last time Getafe CF entered continental competition, back in the 2019/20 season. Despite having one of the smallest squads and more modest budgets in LALIGA EA SPORTS, this team has ground out several impressive victories along the way. They won 15 games this season, with only the top four recording more three-point hauls.

Incredibly, Getafe CF made it into Europe despite having the second-lowest goals scored tally in the entire competition. They netted just 32 times in 38 games, with only Real Oviedo’s 26 goals being lower, but Los Azulones timed those goals to perfection to record several wins. They only scored two or more goals in 10 games, but they won every one of those games.

With 40 percent possession on average, Getafe CF had the lowest possession stats in the competition. But, their defence was so difficult to break down and they conceded just 38 goals over the entire campaign. Only FC Barcelona and Real Madrid had better defensive records, and it’s because of this defence that Getafe CF are back in Europe once again.

A season of two halves

It hasn’t been plain sailing for Getafe CF all season, however. They struggled in the first half of the campaign and even finished Matchdays 21 and 22 in 17th position in the LALIGA EA SPORTS table, the last safe spot above the relegation zone. But, since Matchday 22 they won nine out of 16 games, boasting the fourth-best record in the competition in that span.

This is largely down to the four excellent additions the club made during the winter transfer window. Centre-backs Zaid Romero and Sebastián Boselli have been key, making an already strong defence even better. Then, in attack, Martín Satriano, with six goals, and Luis Vázquez, with three goals, have made a difference. Satriano has been so impressive that the club has already triggered the option to make his loan deal from Lyon a permanent transfer.

Speaking after the qualification, Bordalás reflected on the twists and turns of the season. He said: “This is like winning the Champions League, given our limited resources, the injuries, the absences and the squad we started with… It’s a tremendous achievement. We’re all delighted. For a club like Getafe CF, being in Europe is such a big deal.”

The history of EuroGeta

The first time Getafe CF made it into Europe was in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup, where they went all the way to the quarter-finals and only lost after extra time against Bayern Munich. That was the birth of the EuroGeta phenomenon, the idea that this club could achieve memorable nights on the continent.

Three years later, they returned to the same competition, now rebranded as the Europa League, although they exited at the group stage. Then, under Bordalás another memorable European adventure took place in 2019/20. After finishing fifth in LALIGA EA SPORTS the previous season, Los Azulones qualified for Europe once more and eliminated Ajax 3-2 on aggregate in the Round of 32, just a year after the Dutch side had reached the Champions League semi-finals.

The coronavirus pandemic then halted that momentum, before Getafe CF took on and fell 2-0 to Inter Milan in the Round of 16 once that tournament recommenced. That was without any fans in the stands, but the supporters will be there to back this team once next year’s Conference League gets up and running. They’re ready for the next chapter of the EuroGeta story.
