The previous round, the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola Circuit, saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen enjoy a perfect weekend, as he claimed pole position, victory in the sprint race, victory in the full race and the fastest lap.
The result, combined with Drivers’ Championship leader Charles Leclerc of Ferrari only coming home in sixth, saw the reigning F1 champion move up to second in the standings and close the gap to the Monegasque to 27 points (86 to 59).
Red Bull’s Sergio Perez (54 points), Mercedes’ George Russell (49) and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jnr (38) round out the top five. The Scuderia continue to lead the way in the Constructors’ Championship with 124 points, but Red Bull have closed up in second place with 113. Mercedes are a distant third on 77.
“It was just the rebound we needed after the disappointment of Australia a couple of weeks ago,” said Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. “It was a phenomenal performance because we took a bit of a risk with a couple of small parts we introduced on the car. But we attacked the weekend from the word go and both drivers have been unbelievable. Both Max and Checo have driven brilliantly this weekend and that one-two finish is all credit to the team.”
Red Bull and Ferrari are set to continue their battle in Miami, while the Silver Arrows of Mercedes will hope to take a step forward after their struggling start to the season. Team boss Toto Wolff even apologised to Lewis Hamilton, describing the car as “undriveable” at Imola. “We are not good enough for a world champion… and we just need to fix the car,” said Wolff.
“I’ve definitely had lower moments so it’s not the lowest, for sure,” said Hamilton. “Everyone’s feeling it and everyone’s just head down trying their best. There’s no-one that’s giving up and everyone’s just trying to move it forward as fast as they can.”
This weekend will see the very first edition of the Miami Grand Prix, set to be run on the Miami International Autodrom, a temporary circuit built around the Hard Rock Stadium and its private facilities in the suburb of Miami Gardens, Florida. The track is set to be 5.41 km long and feature 19 corners, with an anticipated average speed of around 223 km/h.
