SuperSport is the ultimate destination for Golf fans, with an unparalleled selection of action from around the world.
The Wells Fargo Championship – formerly known as the Wachovia Championship and Quail Hollow Championship – was first held in 2003. It is usually held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, but was moved to the Washington area this year as the North Carolina venue is preparing for the 2022 President’s Cup.
The 2021 edition was won by Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who shot 274 (-10) to claim the title by one stroke ahead of Mexican Abraham Ancer. It was McIlroy’s third triumph at the Wells Fargo Championship, adding to 2010 and 2015 – making him the only multiple winner in the tournament’s history.
“It’s tough to get over the line, especially if you haven’t done it in a while,” McIlroy said in the wake of his 2021 victory. “It’s such a funny week, knowing my game was pretty good and then having my neck lock up on the range and sitting here Sunday night with the trophy. Just glad I got through it.”
McIlroy will be back at Quail Hollow to try and lift the trophy for a record-extending fourth time. “It is always good to have Rory in the field, as he adds another element to the competition whenever he plays,” said Gary Sobba, Tournament Director. “To have him defending his title will be a special experience for the fans and all involved in this year’s tournament.”
McIlroy is one of six past champions in the field that includes Max Homa (2019), Brian Harman (2017), James Hahn (2016), Lucas Glover (2011), and Sean O’Hair (2009).
Sobba is also happy that the PGA Tour is returning to the Washington area (which has not had a regular event since the National was scrapped in 2018): “I think it’s one of the great golf communities in the United States,” he explained. “I think it’s a community that deserves annual golf, and our goal is to try to prove that, hey, a strong annual tournament – this tournament being strong in May – would merit consideration.”
The TPC Potomac features a par 70, 7,107-yard course and the purse for the Wells Fargo Championship is $9million.
