The only other club with 12 points from their past five matches is FC Barcelona.

Just a few weeks ago, Getafe CF were seriously sweating about the threat of relegation. The club from Madrid finished Matchdays 21 and 22 in 17th position in the LALIGA EA SPORTS table, the last safe spot above the relegation zone. Since then, though, they’ve embarked on a great run, winning four out of their past five matches to climb up the standings, reaching ninth place following a 2-0 victory over Real Betis in Matchday 27. Across the past five matchdays, FC Barcelona are the only other team to have collected 12 points. In other words, there is no other club in LALIGA EA SPORTS right now that is more in form than Getafe CF. Spooling back even further, Getafe CF achieved two draws before this winning run, so they’ve lost just once in their past seven outings.

And, José Bordalás’ side have achieved some very impressive wins in this span. The standout moment was their 1-0 victory at the Bernabéu last Monday night, the club’s first win away at Real Madrid since 2008. Besides that, there have also been three-point hauls against Real Betis, Villarreal CF and Deportivo Alavés, while there was one defeat to Sevilla FC during this impressive run over the past month. Looking at the LALIGA EA SPORTS table, Los Azulones have conquered three members of the top five over the past five matchdays, a truly mighty achievement.

Ask Bordalás, and he’d probably put the Real Betis victory as the most impressive. That’s because his team didn’t suffer a comedown after defeating Real Madrid. The coach pointed to some examples from recent history of clubs earning wins against the giants of LALIGA EA SPORTS but still going down: “Last Monday’s game against Real Madrid is now forgotten, it’s history. In the recent past, CD Leganés beat FC Barcelona 1-0 away and also defeated Atlético de Madrid. Yet they went down. With UD Las Palmas it was the same, as they beat FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid. Yet they were relegated.”

With those warnings in mind, Getafe CF are still fighting for every point in order to achieve their primary objective of securing their spot in the top tier for next season. Still, there are some supporters who will already be looking higher up the table, with Los Azulones now in ninth and just five points behind sixth-placed RC Celta, who occupy the final European position for now.

New signings making a difference

There are several factors behind Getafe CF’s recent turnaround, with Bordalás once again receiving plaudits for the way he has set his team up. Another element is the business done during the January transfer window, when Getafe CF were one of the most active clubs by bringing in five players.

One of those was Martín Satriano, who joined on loan from Lyon and who has scored three goals already, including a stunning winner at the Bernabéu. Argentinian forward Luis Vázquez is another who made an instant impact, scoring on his debut in a 1-1 draw with Girona FC and adding another goal in the win over Deportivo Alavés. Then there’s centre-back Zaid Romero, who has played every minute of the past seven matchdays, during which Getafe CF have lost just once.

Next up for Getafe CF is a trip to take on Atlético de Madrid this weekend. That won’t be easy, but this is a team in incredible form and nothing should be ruled out at this stage.
