In a dramatic twist of fate that threatens to end his presidency, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) boss Hussein Mohammed now faces the real prospect of being ousted from office at the very Special General Meeting (SGM) scheduled for November 7, 2026. What began as a calculated offensive by President Hussein to flush out his Vice President, former international star McDonald Mariga, alongside six key National Executive Committee (NEC) members, has spectacularly backfired. The weapon he intended to use against his rivals is now primed directly at him, as rank-and-file delegates take firm control of the assembly.

The Trap Is Sprung

The rift within the federation’s top ranks reached a boiling point after months of public spatting, accusations of financial impropriety, and open rebellion. Seeking to purge the opposition led by Mariga, Hussein convened the November 7 SGM hoping to use executive authority to deliver a knockout blow.

However, in a stunning counter-move, the General Assembly members—representing county branches and clubs—have invoked Article 31(2) of the FKF Constitution (2017) to wrest control of the agenda and turn the SGM into a member-initiated referendum on the entire executive leadership, including Hussein himself.

In a scathing press statement issued today, October 26, 2026, the General Assembly Members’ Consultative Forum formally declared that the relentless infighting within the NEC has become “untenable” and continues to damage the national game.

“Pursuant to Article 31(2) of the FKF Constitution (2017), members have resolved to convene a Special General Meeting on 7th November 2026 to deliberate on the conduct of the NEC, with a view to resolving the current impasse once and for all, in the best spirit of the game,” read the statement signed by Vincent Meroka Nyasani, Chairman of the FKF Nyamira County Branch.

Neutral Leadership Appointed to Oversee Meeting

Signaling a total loss of confidence in President Hussein’s ability to chair the high-stakes gathering impartially, the Forum revealed that members held an extraordinary consultative meeting on Saturday, October 24, 2026. There, delegates unanimously voted to strip the executive suite of its meeting control mechanisms and installed independent leadership for the November 7 sitting.

Mr. Vincent Meroka Nyasani was nominated as the official Chairperson of the SGM, with Mr. Isaac Munene Kuria named as Secretary. Their mandate is to steer the process, maintain constitutional order, and oversee voting procedures that could end with a total overhaul of the FKF leadership structure.

The members pointed out that their attempt to hold an SGM dates back to May 18, 2026, when a formal petition was submitted to the FKF CEO—a request that went largely ignored as executive wrangles worsened.

High-Stakes Battle Ahead

Despite high-level interventions by global and regional governing bodies including FIFA, CAF, and CECAFA, peace talks have repeatedly collapsed. The delegates confirmed they have formally notified FIFA and other international stakeholders of their decision to exercise their supreme constitutional authority on November 7.

With the General Assembly taking charge, Hussein’s gamble has placed his own presidency on the line. Instead of solidifying his authority by ridding the executive of Mariga and his allies, Hussein must now face a hostile assembly in a meeting that he himself set in motion.

As the countdown to November 7 begins, Kenyan football stands on the edge of a historic realignment, with the fate of both President Hussein Mohammed and Vice President McDonald Mariga resting entirely in the hands of the delegates.
