José Bordalás’ side are now every much in the European qualification picture, after winning five of their past seven.

Getafe CF are in such good form right now that they won their Wednesday night game against Real Sociedad without even needing a shot on target. Los Azulones defeated the newly crowned Copa del Rey champions 1-0 away from home, thanks to a Jon Gorrotxategi own goal. They didn’t have any shots of their own, but were once again so solid in defence that they kept a clean sheet and departed with all three points. There is some obvious momentum behind Getafe CF right now. José Bordalás’ side have won five of their past seven LALIGA EA SPORTS matches. Their defence has been particularly excellent, with the team conceding just three goals and keeping four clean sheets during this winning run. They’ve overcome some very tricky opponents, such as Real Madrid, Real Betis and now Real Sociedad. It’s all clicking right now for the team from southern Madrid.

For the fans, this turnaround has been incredible to witness. At the end of Matchday 22, which took place right around transfer deadline day, Getafe CF sat 17th in the table, just one spot above the relegation zone. Now they’re up to sixth in the LALIGA EA SPORTS standings, which would return the club to European football for the first time since the 2019/20 season, when Los Azulones reached the Europa League Round of 16.

So, how have Getafe CF turned their season around? Well, the fact that their climb up the table started around transfer deadline day is no coincidence. The capital city club were one of the busiest in the January transfer window, and four signings they made, all of them South American players, have truly improved the squad. Let’s take a look at their impacts here.

Martín Satriano

The most impactful signing of all has been Martín Satriano, a player who arrived on loan from Lyon and who has performed so well that Getafe CF have already triggered a purchase option to keep the 25-year-old forward on a permanent basis. The Uruguayan has scored four league goals already for the club, all of them in victories (vs Villarreal CF, Real Madrid, Real Betis and Athletic Club). But, his impact has been about more than goals. In Satriano, Getafe CF now have a truly dangerous option in the opposition box and also when he moves out to the left wing. That threat has given opposition defences a real challenge to think about, making life easier for Los Azulones in other areas of the pitch.

Luis Vázquez

Luis Vázquez was also an attacking addition and the man from Argentina has scored three goals for the club so far, including a goal on his debut in a 1-1 draw against Girona FC. On loan from Belgian side Anderlecht, the 24-year-old has linked up really well with fellow South American Satriano in attack and the pair have done a good job of supporting each other and of always giving the opposition defence something to think about. They’ve appeared together in 12 matches so far, and at least one of Vázquez or Satriano have scored in half of them. Vázquez’s goal against Athletic Club in Matchday 30 summed up the partnership well, as both forwards were inside the six-yard box when Satriano hit a shot off Vázquez and in. These are, in other words, two forwards who get into the danger zones and who make things happen.

Zaid Romero

As well as reinforcing their attack, Getafe CF also bolstered their defence during the January transfer window. One of the ways they’ve done that is through the addition of Argentinian centre-back Zaid Romero. He is another addition on loan from Belgium, in his case from Club Brugge, and he has slotted in perfectly on the left side of the back three that Bordalás’ team play. Usually starting alongside the experienced Domingos Duarte and Djené Dakonam, the 26-year-old doesn’t look at all out of place and has seen just six goals go against his team during the 11 matches he has played.

Sebastián Boselli Sebastián Boselli is the other winter addition who has come in and strengthened the Getafe CF squad. The 22-year-old Uruguayan is, like Romero, a centre-back, and he has only accumulated 310 minutes so far. But, Boselli has made nine appearances in total, often coming on as a substitute to help the team close out matches. When he has started and played the full 90 minutes, something he has done on three occasions, Getafe CF have always won and with a clean sheet, doing so when Boselli played the full game against Real Madrid, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. On loan from River Plate, this is his first experience of European football, and he is fitting in perfectly. If he and the other January signings keep this up, Getafe CF really could achieve a historic finish to this season.
