The defensive midfielder has arrived on loan from AC Milan and is delighted to be in “one of the most beautiful regions in Europe”.

Sevilla FC completed an eye-catching acquisition on deadline day of the summer transfer window, signing defensive midfielder Youssouf Fofana on loan from AC Milan. The 27-year-old has been capped 25 times by the French national team and brings plenty of experience to the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. Sitting alongside fellow new signings Lucas Stassin and Félix Correia, Fofana met the local media at a player presentation held this week, and he firstly explained how his loan move came to fruition. “I’m very happy that this opportunity fell into my lap because I couldn’t have asked for anything better in this situation,” he said of his loan transfer. “I prioritise those who really want me. So, as soon as I sensed their determination, I gave [Sevilla FC] my word, and it was all sorted in a matter of hours.”

Even though he has only been in the Andalusian capital for just over a week, Fofana has already noticed that Sevilla FC is a special club. He said: “It’s one of the most beautiful regions in Europe. In just one week, we’ve met some lovely people whom we see every day. For example, the president. I’ve seen him at least four or five times since I arrived, and that’s not the case everywhere. So, that proves that everyone is involved in the life of the club. That’s really important.”

Making the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán a fortress

The past few seasons have been disappointing for the club, who haven’t had a top-half finish in LALIGA EA SPORTS since the 2021/22 campaign. Last year Los Rojiblancos finished 13th, and they lost more home games than they won. Fofana hopes to change that, and make the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán a fortress once again.

During the press conference, he stated: “As for our objectives, initially it’s simply to turn this stadium back into a fortress, to show others just how hard it is to pick up even a single point here, and to rekindle our supporters’ enthusiasm for coming to watch Sevilla FC, whether at home or away, and to remain competitive right up until the final day of LALIGA EA SPORTS.”

The midfielder made his debut for the club in Sevilla FC’s 1-1 draw away at RCD Espanyol in Matchday 4, a result which means they have seven points from a possible 12 so far. It has, therefore, been a solid start to the campaign for Luis García Plaza’s men.

A player who can adapt to his teammates

Following a busy and uncertain summer, Fofana’s main priority is to return to 100 percent fitness. “I’m going to try to get back to peak fitness as quickly as possible,” he said. “As for the percentage, I couldn’t really tell you. I give 100 percent in everything I do and I’m trying to improve. So, I might be at 70, 80 or even 50 percent. I don’t know.”

Once he does return to his peak level of fitness, the Frenchman is convinced that he’ll be able to offer quality in the centre of the park. He explained that he is a player who can adapt to what his teammates need of him, stating: “I think my greatest strength is my ability to adapt to my teammates. I’ve been here for a week now and I haven’t quite got to grips with all my teammates’ strengths yet. But, with time, I’ll get to know everyone on the pitch and I’ll try to contribute to the team. I’m quite a versatile midfielder and I’ll try to be a support for every player.”

It’s an exciting time for the club and the player, with the new season just getting started and with a shared determination to return Sevilla FC to the top half of the LALIGA EA SPORTS table and to the European qualification battle.
