Before attention turns to matters at the very top of the table, there is a huge game in the relegation battle on Friday night between Girona FC and RCD Mallorca. Both clubs have spent time inside the bottom three this season but currently find themselves in 15th and 17th respectively. With the situation so tight at the bottom, both squads will be determined to win to build up a cushion to the relegation zone.

In the first of Saturday’s games, Villarreal CF fans will pack the Estadio de la Cerámica for a home game against second-bottom Levante UD. If El Submarino Amarillo can pick up one more point, they’ll be guaranteed Champions League football again next season.

The action stays in the Valencian Community, where Valencia CF face off against Atlético de Madrid at Mestalla. Although Los Che have moved a bit away from the relegation zone in recent weeks, they’ll want to keep adding to their points tally and hope to defeat Atleti after four consecutive losses against Diego Simeone’s side.

There is a Basque derby up next, in Deportivo Alavés vs Athletic Club. With the home side in 16th and very much involved in the relegation battle too, this is a huge game for football fans in Vitoria-Gasteiz and not just because it’s a derby. Los Albiazules won at Sam Mamés earlier this season, and would love another three-point haul against their northern neighbours.

At 21:00 CEST, CA Osasuna host league leaders FC Barcelona at El Sadar. With Los Azulgranas having built up an 11-point lead over Real Madrid and with just five matchdays remaining, this is the first weekend when Barça could seal the title. First, they have to do their part and defeat Los Rojillos, which will be easier said than done considering this fixture finished 4-2 to CA Osasuna when these sides met in Pamplona last season.

The first three matches of Sunday are all duels between one team fighting for European positions and another battling against relegation. The first is RC Celta vs Elche CF, with the Galician outfit seeking a second consecutive season in Europe and the Valencian club hoping to stay in LALIGA EA SPORTS for a second year in a row.

Next up is a Madrid derby between Getafe CF and Rayo Vallecano. Los Azulones have been in great form of late, even though they lost to Barça last weekend. They’re still very much in the European race and hope to bring back the phenomenon of EuroGeta. As for Rayo Vallecano, they’re in the middle of a Conference League semi-final, but also need to pick up points to ensure they avoid relegation.

Real Betis vs Real Oviedo is next up, and it’s a must-win game for the Asturian side. They still sit bottom of the table and need to avoid falling further adrift of survival. As for Real Betis, they’re in fifth place but know that this could potentially become a Champions League berth. So, they’ll do all they can to hold on to it.

On Sunday night, at 21:00 CEST, Real Madrid pay a visit to RCD Espanyol and this is where the LALIGA EA SPORTS title could be decided. If FC Barcelona have already defeated CA Osasuna, then Los Blancos would need a victory to avoid entering the following week’s ELCLASICO with the league title already mathematically decided. And, it’s worth noting that RCD Espanyol won this fixture 1-0 last season.

The final game of the matchday comes on Monday and it’s a huge one for Sevilla FC. The historic club have slipped into the bottom three and will be determined to climb up the table when they host Real Sociedad at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. For La Real, it’s a return to the city where they just won the Copa del Rey, and they’ll be a tricky opponent for this Sevilla FC side in need of three points.
