In a hard-hitting letter dated September 16, 2026, addressed to the FIFA and CAF Presidents, the Sports Cabinet Secretary, and Chief of Staff Felix Koskei, Nyamweya warned that Kenya risks international embarrassment ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) if the current football impasse is not swiftly resolved.
Kenya is slated to co-host the historic 2027 continental showpiece alongside East African neighbors Uganda and Tanzania. However, Nyamweya paints a grim picture of the country’s readiness, declaring that the Kenyan “football house is on fire.”
At the center of Nyamweya’s grievances is the current FKF President, Hussein Mohammed, whom he accuses of running the federation like a “personal kiosk.” According to the veteran administrator, Mohammed’s continued stay at the helm has become “toxic to the game” and has brought all meaningful football activities in the country to a grinding halt.
“Because of his misrule, Kenyan football is at a standstill. Leagues are disorganized, national team preparations are in chaos, and grassroots football is dead,” Nyamweya stated in his appeal.
Financial Opacity and Illegal Purges
The petition levels severe allegations of financial mismanagement and constitutional subversion against the current regime. Nyamweya raised the alarm over a controversial Ksh 3 billion budget being forced through by the federation boss without proper breakdown, transparency, or accountability.
Furthermore, Nyamweya accused Mohammed of deploying a “divide and rule” tactic, sidelining elected National Executive Committee (NEC) members, and packing the FKF secretariat with cronies.
In a damning revelation, the former FKF boss alleged that Mohammed is actively bribing FKF Branch Chairmen using federation funds to illegally orchestrate the sacking of dissenting NEC officials.
“Branch chairmen have no constitutional power to sack elected NEC officials, yet he is convening them illegally and, I have been informed, bribing them with Federation money to pass resolutions to sack NEC members who oppose him,” the letter reads, terming it a direct violation of the FKF Constitution.
Nyamweya also noted that endless court cases orchestrated under the current leadership violate FIFA statutes, putting Kenya at a high risk of sanctions and international ridicule.
The Way Forward
To salvage the situation, Nyamweya is calling for the immediate suspension of the current “dysfunctional leadership” to pave the way for a thorough investigation into the alleged misuse of funds and constitutional breaches.
As a way forward, he has urged FIFA, CAF, and the Kenyan government to jointly constitute a Normalization or Caretaker Committee comprising credible, non-partisan football stakeholders and respected former players.
This committee, he suggests, would be tasked with restoring constitutional order, managing federation funds transparently, reviving stalled football activities, and preparing the country for free, fair, and credible FKF elections.
“We cannot head to AFCON 2027 with a federation in squabbles, in court, and run like a personal kiosk,” Nyamweya pleaded. “The world is watching us. Let us save Kenyan football now.”
Neither FIFA, CAF, nor the Ministry of Sports has issued an official response to the petition yet. Efforts to reach FKF President Hussein Mohammed for comment on the allegations were not immediately successful.
