SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing all the action from the third tennis Grand Slam of the year, The Championships, Wimbledon, which will be held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London from Monday 27 June to Sunday 10 July 2022.
SuperSport is the ultimate destination for Tennis fans, with an unparalleled selection of action from around the world.
The 2021 edition of Wimbledon saw Novak Djokovic and Ashleigh Barty win the Men’s and Women’s Singles respectively, while Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic won the Men’s Doubles, Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens won the Women’s Doubles, and Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk claimed the glory in the Mixed Doubles.
For the Men’s Singles, Rafael Nadal will hope to continue the great form he has shown by winning the first two Grand Slams of 2022 – the Australian and French Opens – despite chronic injury issues.
Nadal suffers from Mueller-Weiss syndrome – a rare degenerative condition that affects bones in the feet. “I have been playing with injections on the nerves to numb the foot and that’s why I was able to play during these two weeks,” said the Spaniard after claiming a 14th French Open title earlier this month.
“I have no feeling in my foot, because my doctor was able to put anaesthetic injections on the nerves. That takes out the feeling on my foot.”
He added: “I’m going to be in Wimbledon if my body is ready to be in Wimbledon. That’s it. Wimbledon is not a tournament that I want to miss. I think nobody wants to miss Wimbledon. I love Wimbledon.”
On the Women’s side, French Open champion Iga Swiatek is undoubtedly the best player in the world right now, but she has never got past the Fourth Round at SW19. The 21-year-old Pole has admitted that Wimbledon is “always tricky”.
“My coach believes I can win more matches on grass,” Swiatek explained. “I don’t know about that yet. But I would like to add like one or two. But honestly, grass is always tricky. I actually like the part that I have no expectations. It’s something kind of refreshing.
“Yeah, I’m going to just prepare my best and maybe with his [coach Tomasz Wiktorowski’s] experiences that he had with Aga Radwanska. It was her favourite surface, so maybe he’s going to give me some tips that are actually going to be really helpful and I’m going to enjoy playing on grass a little bit more.”
