The club from Cantabria secured promotion with two matchdays to spare.
Football fans in Santander have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions over the past decade and a half, but they’re celebrating right now after Real Racing Club secured promotion back to LALIGA EA SPORTS. By defeating Real Valladolid 4-1 on Saturday, and with UD Almería losing at the same time, the club from northern Spain mathematically sealed their return to the top flight of Spanish football, where they last competed back in the 2011/12 season, when they finished bottom of the table. Following their relegation from the first to the second tier, Real Racing Club finished 20th again in 2012/13 to suffer a back-to-back relegation and they spent seven total seasons in the third tier of the Spanish football pyramid. Promotion back into LALIGA HYPERMOTION in 2022 was followed by steady progress, as the team finished 12th, then 7th and then 5th last season, with a semi-final exit in the promotion playoffs.
This season they’ve taken another step forward and have been top of the table for 30 of the 40 matchdays played so far in LALIGA HYPERMOTION, and been inside the top two for 36 of the 40 matchdays. With 85 goals scored, Real Racing Club have been the top scorers by a distance, with UD Almería’s 79 goals the next highest, and their goal difference of +26 is six more than second-placed RC Deportivo. In other words, Real Racing Club have been the best team in the division all season, and thoroughly deserve their promotion.

José Alberto: The coach behind the promotion
Overseeing the steady progress of the club has been José Alberto, the 43-year-old tactician. He came in midway through the 2022/23 season with the team inside the LALIGA HYPERMOTION relegation zone and he has steered the club upwards ever since then.
His style of attacking football has been praised by many, including Real Racing Club legend Quique Setién. He said: “Real Racing Club play the best football in the division, and by some distance. Some would have preferred to concede fewer goals, but when you play with courage, you have to accept the consequences too. And for those of us who’d rather win 5-4 than 1-0, José Alberto is a blessing.”
For José Alberto, 2026/27 will be his first taste of LALIGA EA SPORTS. He hasn’t ever played in or coached in Spanish football’s top tier, but if he continues the steady progress he has made with Real Racing Club in recent years then there’s a chance he can achieve something special with Los Racinguistas.

The return of a historic club
Although they’ve been away for 14 years, Real Racing Club are one of the most successful and historic clubs in Spanish football. They have the 16th-most points in the history of the top division, and have spent the 14th-most seasons in the top tier, with 44. They’ve even played in Europe, making the 2008/09 UEFA Cup.
The objective next season be just to stay up, but if they manage to do so then this is a club with the potential to build and become a mainstay in LALIGA EA SPORTS once again. With a loyal fanbase, and a 22,000-capacity stadium in El Sardinero, Real Racing Club will be backed by a strong home support next season. It’ll be fun to see Los Verdiblancos back at the top level.
