Spain’s second division, called LALIGA HYPERMOTION, has developed a reputation in recent years as one of the most competitive and wild leagues in all of European football. Anything can happen in any game, and all clubs start the season dreaming of promotion and fearing relegation in somewhat equal measure. With eight matchdays in the books, the table is beginning to take shape and it’s becoming a little clearer who the serious candidates for promotion are. At the bottom end of the standings, certain clubs already face an uphill battle just to remain in the competition. Below, we take a look at five of the most interesting storylines from across the division.
Two historic clubs occupy the promotion spots
Currently sitting first and second in LALIGA HYPERMOTION are RC Deportivo and Real Racing Club, both on 16 points. These are two of the most historic clubs in Spanish football, having spent 46 and 44 seasons in the top flight respectively, and fans in the cities of A Coruña and Santander are beginning to dream. RC Deportivo haven’t been in the top tier since 2017/18 and Real Racing Club since 2011/12, so both teams are desperate to end their respective droughts.
To give an idea of how much better these two clubs have been performing so far in 2025/26, RC Deportivo boast a goal difference of +11 and Los Verdiblancos of +7, while no other team in the competition boasts a goal difference higher than +4. The Galicians are also undefeated and, even if they’ve drawn their past two, confidence remains high.

Andrés and Asier lead the way for Real Racing Club
In terms of who the best players so far have been, two of Real Racing Club’s players have really stood out. Winger Andrés Martín and striker Asier Villalibre have scored six and five goals, respectively, and no other player in the division has scored more. They’ve also registered two and one assists each, respectively.
Villalibre arrived on loan from Deportivo Alavés during the summer and has made an instant impact. He famously scored the goal that won the Basque side promotion during the 2022/23 playoffs, and now the fans in Santander hope he can return them to the promised land too.
Ibai Gómez and Gerard Piqué have FC Andorra in position
Looking at the teams currently inside the playoff spots, there is one club which stands out for being an unfamiliar contender. That’s FC Andorra, the club which only reached professional football for the first time in 2022. After going back down to the third tier and winning promotion back up to LALIGA HYPERMOTION last season, Els Tricolors have kept up that momentum and sit fourth as things stand.
While Gerard Piqué remains firmly involved in the club, as he has been for the past few years, there has been a change in the dugout. Former Athletic Club player Ibai Gómez came in as coach during the summer and has enjoyed a terrific start, with four wins, two draws and two defeats so far. There is a long way to go, but FC Andorra hope to make it to LALIGA EA SPORTS and bring the likes of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid to the principality.

Real Zaragoza are in trouble
Real Zaragoza are a truly historic club, the team of Spain’s fourth-largest city. They’re also the team with the 11th-most points in LALIGA EA SPORTS history. However, Los Maños haven’t picked up a single top-flight point since 2012/13. After suffering relegation that season, Real Zaragoza fans have truly suffered and have rarely even been in the promotion conversation.
This year, though, things have gone from bad to worse. While the clubs works to redevelop its home of La Romareda, they are playing at a temporary ground and still haven’t won there this season. They have just one total win so far and sit second-bottom on just six points. Spending so long outside of Spain’s top division has already been distressing for the club’s fans, but a relegation to the third tier would be even worse.
One win separates third from ninth
As well as FC Andorra, the other teams currently in the playoff positions are more familiar ones, in Cádiz CF, UD Las Palmas and SD Huesca. All these clubs have recent experience of LALIGA EA SPORTS and all would love to return as soon as possible.
But, they’re not alone in that desire and they’re not alone in the table. It’s so tight in this section of the standings, as exemplified by the fact that third-placed Cádiz CF have 15 points and ninth-placed UD Almería have 12 points. That’s a difference of just three points, or one victory. Anything and everything can change in an instant in LALIGA HYPERMOTION.
