Antoine Griezmann has been named the LaLiga Santander Player of the Month for March. The 32-year-old played a crucial role as Atletico picked up nine points from nine in what was a testing month for Los Colchoneros.
Griezmann smashed home a stunning long-range drive and also provided an assist as Atletico kicked off their March by thrashing Sevilla FC 6-1 at the Civitas Metropolitano. Diego Simeone’s team then went on to grab a 1-0 away victory at Girona FC with Griezmann driving proceedings, before rounding off the month with a 3-0 win over Valencia, in which the French forward opened the scoring.
Atletico are going through a purple patch in LaLiga Santander, having won seven and drawn three of their last ten fixtures in the competition. This has seen Los Rojiblancos consolidate themselves in third position in the league standings while also bringing them within five points of second-placed city rivals Real Madrid.
In winning the LaLiga Player of the Month for March the Atletico hitman claims his seventh such prize in Spanish football. He follows in the footsteps of RC Celta’s Gabri Veiga who was Player of the Month for February. Griezmann fought off stiff competition from Enes Unal (Getafe CF), Raphinha (FC Barcelona), Iago Aspas (RC Celta), Samu Chukwueze (Villarreal CF), Borja Iglesias (Real Betis) and David Silva (Real Sociedad) to come out on top of the voting.
