The longest running event on the PGA Tour outside of the four majors, the BMW Championship (formerly known as the Western Open) is the second event of the PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs. It is open to the top 70 finishers from the previous week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship and will feature no 36-hole cut.
The top 30 FedEx Cup points leaders following the BMW Championship advance to the final playoff event, The Tour Championship, where the FedEx Cup Champion will be determined.
The BMW Championship field is headlined by Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
Last year’s BMW Championship was won by Patrick Cantlay, who defeated fellow American Bryson DeChambeau in a playoff.
“I got it all week. There was maybe one or two guys that followed me around maybe all four days, and just every hole, screaming it. These were some of the most supportive, loudest fans I’ve ever experienced,” Cantlay said after his triumph last year.
“I’m as focused as I can be on every single shot, and I try not to let my mind get past the moment that I’m in, and maybe that’s why I come across a little sedated out there.
“But I’m locked in, and I’m as focused as I can be. Then I kind of let the chips fall where they do. Try not to get caught up in being out-driven 45 yards or whatever it is. I just try and lock in and do my absolute best in that moment, and my best is pretty good.”
Wilmington Country Club’s Tom Humphrey said of the 2022 BMW Championship: “It’s a big deal and we’re very excited about it. And from a golf standpoint, this is as good as it gets for a guy like me.”
He added, “I’m sure if somebody was a big follower of some of the folks that went to LIV, they might be disappointed. But we do know at the end of the day, we’re going to have some of the really, really good players here and some great names.”
The Wilmington Country Club features a 7244-yard par 70 course. The purse for the BMW Championship is $15million.
